Louisville Music Scene

Newsflash: I love traveling. And music.

One of my most favorite activities I've liked to do over the past few years is explore the music scene in my 6-month cities. I've tended to rate my favorites based on the live music scene, public and independent radio stations, and personal opportunities I've had to perform (which of course lies my bias).

I'm pleased to say Louisville KY wins as my favorite 6-month music city over the past 2 years.

#1 Live music scene

Before moving here, I assumed that since Louisville is so close to music cities Nashville and Cincinnati, the music scene wouldn't be as vibrant. Surely those towns are so saturated with talent, Louisville wouldn't be as  blessed. How wrong I was. Though there are a handful of pop giants that have breezed over Louisville, all of my favorite bands (specifically Contemporary Folk, and Indie Pop) have taken priority to hit up Derby City.

My most favorite concert ever? Alison Krauss & Union Station

Probably the most visually appealing concert I've ever attended, Broken Bells

What I've loved the most are the fun free concerts the city offers. During the final week of "Derby Days," Louisville has free concerts every night. We got to see awesome local bands an even the 90's Alternative group Everclear!

#2 Radio stations

I know I grew up with KEXP and I don't know if any public radio station can compare to their perfection. But boy do I love WFPK. It's fabulously organized and driven by local talent. I owe this station my discovery of Broken Bells, The Whigs, Sabina, and the latest albums by Nickel Creek and Ray Lamontagne.

Even cooler, they offer Waterfront Wednesdays, free concerts downtown with great headliners like Moon Taxi and the Old 97's (pictures above).

This is the first time I've explored independent radio stations in any city! In February, I had the great honor to play on local station, Crescent Hill Radio with CJ Cumberland. That airtime opened a lot of doors for me which leads me to my last point. Listen to the whole interview here!

#3 Music opportunities

Louisville as been so good to me as a musician. I've been able to teach 6 students voice and guitar lessons, interview on the radio, perform at pre-derby shows and bars, and jam with Bluegrassians and oh-so-talented church buddies. Not only has this kept me fresh as a performer, it's encouraged me to continue creating, collaborating, and promoting.

Like mentioned in my Alison Krauss post, there are times when music overwhelms my soul and my heart feels like it's overflowing with joy. I feel like Louisville has made this happen more in such a short time than any other 6-month city. It's helps remind me of my passion and vocation to music. I hope I can always remember these feelings wherever I end up living.
