4 facts about my parents on their 38th anniversary (2 days late!)

Couple of lookers right?!

Tuesday, my parents celebrated their 38th anniversary. I couldn't help but reflect on their marriage and the many things that brought them to the amazing place they are now. So here's a few facts about my parent's that maybe you didn't know before.

Fact #1: Rockets or Commercial Jets?!
My dad grew up dreaming to work for NASA. Upon graduation in aeronautical engineering, he applied to Boeing (in Washington) and NASA (in Florida). He heard from Boeing very quickly but NASA was a little slower to respond. The day after he accepted the Boeing offer, NASA gave him a letter of acceptance. But he stayed loyal to Boeing. This monumental decision is what ultimately brought him to McDonald Douglas in California to meet my mom!

Fact #2: The Good from Divorce
Both my parents were previously married. Even though divorce is so hard and I can't even begin to understand all the hardships my mom and dad faced through it separately, I'm so grateful for it. My dad, vowed that the next time he would marry it would be forever. His level of commitment and devotion is so apparent through their relationship. And my mom had my sister Miranda in her first marriage!!!! I SERIOUSLY couldn't imagine life without her love and friendship. She's makes me one of the happiest people.

Hotty!!!
My dad with my sissy Miranda
Fact # 3: Creeper in the office!
My dad OGGLED after my mom at work. Like, creeper status. She worked as a rollerskating blueprint control deliverer (yes that's real life in the 70's) and he was an engineer. He said EVERY day he would watch her eat lunch and just drool over how pretty she was. But she was married at the time! Then after her divorce one of her friends slipped him a note saying she (my mom) wanted to go out with him. Talk about a stroke of luck!

Fact #4: A Female Proposal
After two years of dating, my parents were at dinner when my mom told my dad, "I want to get married! I want more children! And if this is what you want too, you better let me know by tomorrow or we need to go our separate ways." The next day, my dad proposed...I seriously LOVE her courage. Talk about an assertive DTR!

Happy Anniversary MOM and DAD!

Kentucky Oaks Derby in Pink and Bow Ties

Most Louisville natives don't attend the Kentucky Derby because it's so touristy and crowded. But since Trent and I figured this was probably the only time in our life we'd live there, YOLO! I suppose we were long-term tourists anyways.

Before I begin talking about our derby experiences I should mention....we didn't actually attend THE derby; we went to the Kentucky Oaks! It's the derby the day before the Derby and the fillies race. There are a TON of benefits to going to Oaks over derby:
  • seated tickets are about 1/3rd of the cost (that's over $100 a pop),
  • everyone wears PINK,
  • you can compete in a fashion contest,
  • and...GIRL POWER DUH!
As you could imagine, Derby tickets are rather difficult to find at a reasonable price. The seated tickets sell out way before the event and we were stuck to online vendors. I actually got my identity stolen in the process of getting these babies!

A little more information, there are several tiers to the seating and with that the class of the people who come: The infield where everyone drinks and bets but doesn't really get the see the races, various levels of bleacher seating and the higher you were the more expensive. Then of course the SUITES that only corporations and celebrities afford. We managed to snag tickets from craigslist on the first floor 1/8 of a mile from the finish line. All things considered, these tickets were pretty good for us!

Like noobs, we arrived much earlier than most attendees. But it was awesome because it gave me the chance to snag some pictures close to the track and with a horsey!

Pretty big eh? That's probably about 1/3 of the downs since I'm not showing the infield or back side.

Oaks got crowded by about 12pm. Trent and I were going crazy. I can't even imagine
how busy the actual Derby day is!

So it's like what I said: Oaks is themed for the ladies and what better way to cater to us than a FASHION CONTEST?! It was so fun/weird. You got a real mix of Avante Garde, Southern sophisticated, and well...white trash. But the fun part was that anyone could participate. So of course I had to take my shot at the winnings!

a very typical derby hat. Clearly I missed the memo here...

So excited for my cat walk debut! Also, the girl in front of me got to the callbacks...so close!

studly Trent with bow tie and Sperries.

Found all out swag online: Craigslist, Amazon, Etsy, and Ebay!

Oaks was the highlight of my 2015. I had a freaking blast! I'm so glad Trent humored me by wearing a bow tie and good attitude.

Also, I'm clearly pining for my next adventure as I type away the details of our fun Louisville experiences. I don't think it's sunk in that we're not moving every six months anymore...who wants to travel with us?!

Pre-derby festivities

I can't believe it was just a year ago that I lived in Louisville. In some ways it seems like just a week ago and in other ways a lifetime. I can't really define which is which. But these memories seem pretty far away for some reason. Hopefully I can remember it well enough to put in writing!

In the first weekend of May, Kentucky Downs host the Kentucky Derby but what most people don't know about is the month preceding: DERBY DAYS! It all kicks off with the most epic and beautiful fireworks display I've ever seen called Thunder over Louisville. A whopping 400,000 locals attend the show and before the "thunder," tons of air performers including the Blue Angels entertain in the sky.

Our first experience with Red Bull's RED, SILVER, and BLUE editions. We're unfortunately obsessed now...

This magical $5 Pegasus pin give you access to all the fun Derby Days events!

NOT the Blue Angels. But I like these flyers more... (can't remember their names!?)

Basically this day is exhausting because you eat funnel cakes and look at the sky for hours.

These photos don't even remotely do the show justice. Also, the music was totally cheese ball....

Hundreds of festivities follow Thunder Over Louisville and we only made it to a few but they were all so fun and memorable. I LOVED this city so much because of Derby Days. It connected all the locals together in this very unique and old-timey cultural event.

Below are pictures from the hot air balloon race. We had to wake up at 6am on a Saturday (Trent almost didn't join me...). The coolest part was that most people only see either the take off or the landing because they move fast and usually land in really weird places. But! We were so lucky they landed just blocks away from our apartments.

Derby Days hosts tons of free concerts but this one was my favorite. It was so white trashy and hilarious. Definitely a throwback to my 90's summers. EVERCLEAR!

For year's Louisville has help a great mattress race. It's exactly like it sounds. Lots of the big companies from the city participate as contenders and they decorate the mattresses to a theme. This year was animals I believe?

The week of the derby is extra crazy and includes a "Pegasus Parade" down one of the main streets. It was a little underwhelming especially since the giant Pegasus was slowly deflating in it's left hind leg Poor Peggy!

Lil' Sebastian miniature horses!!!!!

Lots of local joints throw their own derby parties including a billiard room that invited me to be one of the many entertainers of the night.

All these pictures and I haven't even gotten to the actual derby celebration!?! Hang tight. It's coming...

Top 14 from '14

I'm sure most of you by now have heard the DJ Earworm Mashup "United State of Pop 2014." Somewhere between the fourteenth snippet of "Shake it off" and Katy Perri's "Dark Horse" (wasn't it released in 2013?!) I started getting really depressed with last year's Billboard top 40. Also, nice modulation into "Fancy" Earworm...that was super seamless. Is this seriously what America thinks are the anthems of 2014? I remember everyone posts for the new year celebrating how EPIC 2014 was and I certainly agree. Our music needs to match those sentiments.

So without further ado (since I know we're basically in mid-January) I give you my Top 14 of '14 Spotify playlist. I hope that 10 years from now when I look back on the year I lived in Louisville and the year I moved to TX and the year I bought a 3D Printer that I'll think of these songs as a soundtrack to those life events:

Control- Broken Bells This song was my summer anthem. The first time I heard them on the public Louisville music station, WFPK I was hooked. A minor key, psychedelic rock, yummy low electric hooks, and clean vocals makes a perfect retro-pop classic.

Supernova- Ray LaMontagne  Loved this song so much I made a Pandora station after it (putting it right up there with TLC Creep and Holiday Sufjan Stevens). I close my eyes and see images of flower crowns while listening to this lighthearted bluesy tune. Plus, how can you turn down that subtle rasp?

West Coast- Lana Del Rey I gotta admit: I've got mixed feeling about Del Rey's voice. On one hand she's so unique and memorable. On the other hand, she kind of annoys me when I hear too much of her. But this song uses a sharp rhythm juxtaposed with a swaying chorus that haunts my whole person.

Blue Moon- Beck I got into this song while Trent was commuting every weekend to Cleveland and I was unemployed and worrying at home. I know it's a little mellow dramatic, but these lyrics comforted me through my solo days: "I'm so tired of being alone/ these penitent walls are all I've known/ Songbird calling across the water/ Inside my silent asylum."

Sweet Amarillo- Old Crow Medicine Show I think this tune would have made the top 14 even without hearing it because I love OCMS so much. But to know that this is a completion of a Bob Dylan's 40-year-old lick it just genius to me.

Take Me to Church- Hozier One of the few hits in my list, Hozier is one of my favorite new faces of Alternative Rock. His booming fire-and-brimstone soul voice fused with edgy garage-rock matched perfecting with it's ironic and rebellious lyrics.

Water Fountain- tUnE-yArDs Written by a girl who used to work as a puppeteer, Merrill Garbus is a woman after my own heart. Pitchfork says it best: "She's an introvert's nightmare, and all she wants is for you to open your heart and sing."

Wrong & Right- June Cat This is actually created by two friends of mine, Colin Hatch and Taylor Olsen. They released six songs last year and I can't tell you how impressed I was with this one and "Fall." Tight harmonies and yummy guitar pickin' plus every time this song opens up I can't help but think of E.L.O (Xanadu anyone?).

Just One Of The Guys- Jenny Lewis Blunt, honest, and witty lyrics, I keep meaning to check out the rest of this album. This girl's got the ability to tell it like it is while still sounding eloquent and well-versed.

The Writing's on the Wall- OK Go OK Go has been one of MY bands. You know, the bands you watch grow up that nobody took a second look at for years? Then everyone's obsessed and it's almost annoying (ok...it's full-on annoying) because they were your's and now their everyone's. This little ditty is one of my all-time faves because it's mature and the lyrics are profound. It almost sounds like an apology to Cathy from Jamie in The Last Five Years

My Silver Lining- First Aid Kit These young girls are ON. Whispers of ethereal melodies with a pumping "you gotta keep on keepin on" was one of my favorite jams during the 2pm hours at works.

Hayloft- Nickel Creek I know most of you probably would say Destination should be my favorite Nickel Creek track from 2014, but I just loved this experimental number. It was such a cool idea blending modern Americana with electronic pop vocals and rhythms. Mix it with their PG risque lyrics and I'm sold and ready for Nickel Creek to take this new direction to the next level!

Girls Chase Boys- Ingrid Michaelson The only way to properly listen to this song is to watch the music video.

Chandelier- Sia Another real winner from 2014, I think this was one of the few top 40 songs that showed me there was still hope left for pop. Gorgeous electropop vocals and an interesting reflection on "Party Girl" mentality, I was blown away by Sia and feel like I can listen to her hit and still find something new that I love about it.

Unemployed Vacation Part 2: Park City Reunion

Like I previously mentioned, sometimes I take unemployment vacations. Well I went on one just last week! That's right; I quit my job and from here on out will FOLLOW MY DREAMS! Lucky me, this particular unemployment vacation doubled as a family reunion. My two sisters, their buck wild kids, and I all reunited with my parent's in Park City. We visited every single kid-friendly site available in the Valley. OK maybe it was just the Museum of Curiosity and Hogle Zoo.

One of the evenings all the adult ladies visited my absolute FAVORITE restaurant, Goldener Hirsch in celebration of my parents finally selling their Washington house. They have the most delectable swiss-influenced food complete with fondue and all the lickin's. Believe me when I say I indulged that evening. If you're ever in the area, get "The Campfire" dessert. It's basically as magical as Disneyland.

Of all the activities we did on that brief vacation, my absolute favorite part was playing music for the kiddos. Love their energy for music and movement. They're the best mangily bunch'a rascals I know!
